Merino Wool: Comfort Meets Fire-Resistance – What I’ve Learned in Knitwear Manufacturing

Over the years in the knitwear industry, I’ve tested a lot of fibers. Some perform well in everyday wear. Others fall apart under real stress. But there’s one material that keeps surprising me – not just for comfort, but for safety.

Merino wool.

In 2022, The Woolmark Company published a technical report on wool’s natural flame-resistant properties. It confirmed what many of us in manufacturing had already seen on the shop floor: wool behaves differently than cotton or synthetics when exposed to fire.

If you’re designing protective clothing for firefighters, military personnel, or even F1 drivers, this matters more than you might think.

Why Wool Stands Out in Fire Safety

Let me put it simply.

Among untreated natural textiles, wool is the clear leader. It has a higher ignition temperature, lower heat release, and – this is the key – it self-extinguishes. Cotton doesn’t. Polyester definitely doesn’t.

For close-fitting base layers, that difference can save lives.

Six Technical Reasons Wool Is Fire-Safe

I’ve seen these play out in both lab reports and real production runs.

1. Very High Ignition Temperature

Wool needs 570–600°C to catch fire.
Cotton? Just 255°C.

That gap gives the wearer critical extra seconds in a dangerous situation.

2. High Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI)

Wool requires 25.2% oxygen to keep burning.
But normal air only has 21% oxygen.

This means wool is simply harder to ignite accidentally – unlike cotton, polyester, or nylon.

3. Low Heat Release – Slower Burning

Wool releases energy slowly (4.9 Kcal/g).
Yes, cotton has a slightly lower number on paper, but it burns fast at a much lower temperature.

Wool’s heat releases between 465–530°C. That’s a big safety margin.

4. Self-Extinguishing

Remove the flame, and wool stops burning.
The high nitrogen content in wool creates a protective char layer that blocks fire spread.

This isn’t theory. I’ve run small-scale tests myself. Wool goes out. Synthetics don’t.

5. No Melting, No Dripping

Polyester and nylon melt and drip when heated. That molten material sticks to skin and causes severe burns.

Wool doesn’t melt. It chars. That alone makes it safer for any base layer worn close to the body.

6. Overall Protection

When you combine ignition temperature, oxygen index, heat release, and non-melting behavior, wool comes out on top among untreated fibers.

For any fire-resistant knitwear project, it’s the obvious starting point.

What Real Experiments Show

In tests using pigskin to simulate human skin, Merino wool and flame-retardant wool consistently outperformed synthetics.

Polyester and polypropylene melted quickly and adhered to the surface – causing more harm than the heat itself. Wool caused less damage and provided better overall protection.

Beyond Firefighters: Where Else Wool Is Used

Wool has been standard in military, police, and firefighting gear for decades. But today, it’s also found in:

  • Astronaut suits

  • Search and rescue clothing

  • F1 drivers’ base layers

Why? Because wool combines flame resistance with breathability and moisture-wicking comfort. That’s rare. Most protective fabrics sacrifice comfort for safety. Wool gives you both.

Wool is comfortable. Everyone knows that.

But its technical side – especially fire resistance – is often overlooked. For anyone developing functional knitwear, understanding these natural properties is the first step.

You don’t always need chemical treatments or synthetic blends. Sometimes, nature already solved the problem.
